The Value Of EMDR Consultation
My continued interest and excitement with EMDR out of being privileged to play a part in my clients’ amazing shifts, and remarkable life changes as they have participated in EMDR therapy. At this point in my journey, I assist clinicians in the EMDR therapy process, creating empowerment so they can more readily empower their clients.
For Newly Trained Therapists
Consultation can be expensive, and it takes time out of your schedule. After all, you are a highly skilled therapist, you have done your basic training, and met all of the requirements. You feel ready to apply the extremely valuable information you gained in your basic or other EMDR trainings to your clients.
If you are newly trained, incorporating the standard protocol and applying it in your sessions with clients can be complex. It is a challenging process as we learn to integrate all of the information and handouts. How do you develop a target sequencing plan? How do you know when to return to target? What do you do if you are applying the protocol and your client is looping or blocked? When is it okay to start with something other than the worst memory? Many times, your clients’ needs may go beyond what you could possibly have understood in basic training. The client may require more advanced interventions that you have yet to be exposed to.
For Seasoned Therapists
No matter how long you have been trained in EMDR, presenting cases to an experienced consultant gives you options and clarification as you work to conceptualize the case together. We all need an objective and supportive perspective at times to assist with our cases, no matter the length or depth of our experience. It builds confidence and solid skills. It expands our map for doing the 8 phases and 3 prongs of EMDR therapy so that you can assist clients in dual awareness and staying in their window of tolerance. You can then stay connected, present, and able to co-regulate with your clients.
